Canisius freshman pitcher Jenn Solis allowed one run on four hits and pitched her first collegiate complete-game and fellow rookie Meghan Cuda went 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Golden Griffins ended their six-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Colgate Wednesday afternoon in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader in Hamilton, N.Y. In the nightcap. the host Raiders (16-30) posted a 5-4 win over the Griffs to end their own seven-game losing skid. Canisius is now 22-23 on the year with the split.

GAME ONE - Canisius 3, Colgate 1
The win in game one improved Solis to 2-1 on the season in the circle. She allowed Colgate to score in the top of the first and then shutdown the Raiders’ bats, allowing just three more hits over the game’s next six innings. Cuda led off the game with a single and then scored later in the top of the first frame and sophomore Michelle DelPrince drove in the eventual game-winning RBI with a double in the top of the sixth.

Freshmen Alexis Roman and Tori Nappo each had a hit and a run scored for the Blue and Gold in the victory, while junior Valorie Nappo and senior Katie Medina also picked up hits for Canisius, which banged out eight hits as a team in the game. Colgate senior Alana Dyson had three of her team’s hits in the losing effort, highlighted by a leadoff triple in the home half of the first. She later scored on a sacrifice fly by teammate Marisa Dowling.

GAME TWO - Colgate 5, Canisius 4
In the second game, Canisius took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning after RBI-singles from freshman Bethany DeMarco and Cuda. Colgate took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of that frame, taking advantage of two Canisius errors while posting three hits on the scoreboard as well. Colgate again took advantage of two Canisius defensive mistakes in the bottom of the third to score twice, making the score 5-2 in favor of the home team before the Griffs answered with single runs in the fourth and the sixth.

Trailing 5-2 with two outs in the fourth, DelPrince reached base via a walk, and later came around to score on an RBI-single from Valorie Nappo. In the sixth, Medina drew a bases-load walk to earn an RBI as Cuda scored from third, but Colgate pitcher Megan Carnase got out of the jam by getting a ground-ball out to end the Griffs’ scoring threat. Carnase improved her record to 3-10 on the year after she allowed four runs while scattering 10 hits over seven innings. She also struck out four and walked three. Canisius junior Jen Consaul took the loss in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed five runs, none of which were earned, on eight hits to go with three strikeouts and four walks. Consaul is now 15-11 on the year.

The Griffs will close out the 2013 season on Saturday, May 4, when the team travels to play a MAAC doubleheader at Siena. First pitch in Loudonville, N.Y., is set for 1 p.m.
