Sophomore Devon Stewart (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The 2012 MAAC Rookie of the Year, Stewart earns the award for the first time this season.

Stewart went seven shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over Fairfield in the regular-season finale. The sophomore allowed four hits and walked two while striking out six to win his fourth game of the season. Stewart allowed the leadoff batter to reach one time in his seven innings and didn’t allow a Fairfield batter to reach third base in the start.

Stewart is the ninth Golden Griffin to win a weekly award this season from the MAAC, giving Canisius three more players to claim a weekly honor than any other team in the conference. The nine Canisius players have combined to win 12 awards, five more than second-highest total of seven by Marist.

Canisius (39-15) will be the No. 3 seed in this week’s MAAC Championship (May 23-26 in Trenton, N.J. at ARM & HAMMER Park). The Golden Griffins open play against No. 2 seed Marist College at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
