Canisius women’s basketball coach Terry Zeh has announced the signing of Tamara Miskovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Royce Shields (Kansas City, Kan.) to National Letters of Intent. The two student-athletes will join early signees Lauren D’Hont and Laniere Coleman in the Golden Griffin women’s basketball program starting with the 2013-14 season.

A 5-foot-9 guard, Miskovic has spent time with the Serbia Under-20 National Team, which is competing in the U20 European Championship this summer in Samsun, Turkey. Miskovic spent the past two seasons playing for Vrbas Medela in Serbia and averaged 5.4 points per game and had 51 assists last season. Miskovic has also been named MVP at two international tournaments and was a member of the first-place team at the Vojvodina Under-19 Championship.

“Tamara is a high-level passer who sees the game two steps ahead,” Zeh said. “She has played a great level of basketball internationally and brings that experience to our program.”

Shields comes to Canisius after two seasons at Highland Community College in Kansas. Shields averaged 10.0 points per game as a sophomore when the Scotties finished in fifth place at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Prior to playing at Highland, the 5-foot-6 guard played at Wyandotte High School in Kansas. A two-time First-Team All-League selection, Shields averaged 15.4 points per game as a senior, shooting 54 percent from the floor, and earned Honorable Mention All-State accolades.

“Royce brings an added dimension of quickness and athleticism and is a great perimeter defender,” Zeh said. “Royce comes from a good junior college program and really understands how to play.”

Canisius opens the season on Friday, Nov. 8, when the Golden Griffins host the University of Detroit in the Koessler Athletic Center.
