Golf Ends Weekend with Strong Effort

Canisius sophomore Andrew Romano shot an even-par 72 and fellow sophomore Hunter Sagar shot 74 on the final day of the fifth annual Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate tournament at the Kaluhyat Course in Verona, N.Y. As a team, the Golden Griffins posted a team score of 299 in the final round and finished the 54-hole event in 13th place.

Romano’s 72 ties his collegiate career low and helped him finish in a tie for 49th in the field. Sagar ended the two-day tournament with a 54-hole score of 228, which is his career low for a 54-hole event. He finished tied for 42nd overall. Freshman David Berkun shot a four-over par score 76 and sophomore Brendan Polsin fired a 77 in the final round.

The host Missouri Tigers won the tournament at Turning Stone for the second-straight year and for the third time in the event’s five-year history. The Tigers posted a team score of 842, which ended up being 22 strokes under par. Cleveland State and McNeese State tied for second with team scores of 869, while Binghamton (880) and UConn (882) rounded out the top-five.

Cleveland State golfer Andrew Bailey won the individual title with his 54-hole score of 207, which was nine under. He shot 71 in the final round and ended the event as one of three golfers in the field to shoot under par in all three rounds.

The Canisius golf team will return to action Sept. 16-17, when the Griffs travel to Olean, N.Y., to take part in the annual Leo Keenan Invitational, hosted by St. Bonaventure.
