Canisius College head men’s basketball coach Jim Baron announced today that Lou Dunbar (Seabrook, Texas/Clear Falls) has signed his National Letter of Intent and will be on the Golden Griffins’ active roster for the 2013-14 season. Dunbar is the son of “Sweet Lou” Dunbar, the former Harlem Globetrotter who played for the University of Houston from 1972-75.

Dunbar averaged 18.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game in his senior season en route to being named the Texas District 24 5A Most Valuable Player. He scored in double figures 29 times in his senior season, highlighted by his pair of 34-point games against Clear Lake High School. In his last two varsity seasons, the 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard made a total of 134 3-point field goals, and he ended his scholastic career by shooting 57 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range and 84 percent from the free-throw stripe.

Dunbar joins six newcomers on the Canisius roster, which returns three starters and five letterwinners from the 2012-13 season. Last year, in Baron’s first year as the Griffs’ head coach, Canisius went 20-14 overall and 11-7 in MAAC play. The 20-win season was the program’s first since 2000-01 and the team ended the year in the quarterfinal round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, the team’s first postseason appearance since 1996.

The Griffs are set to open the 2013-14 season Monday, Nov. 11, when the Blue and Gold hosts South Dakota at 7 p.m., in the Koessler Athletic Center.
