A former standout with the Golden Griffins, Brendan Murphy is in his second season as assistant coach, serving as the program’s defensive and recruiting coordinator.

A four-year letterwinner with the program from 2008 to 2012, Murphy made an immediate impact with the Griffs following his move to the coaching ranks. In his first season on the Canisius sideline in 2014, he led the top-ranked scoring defense in the MAAC at 9.47 goals per game – more than 2.5 goals per game better than the previous season. In addition, goalkeeper Alex Govenettio also increased his save percentage by 11.1 percent during the 2014 campaign.

Murphy rejoined the Griffs after spending the 2013 season with Bellarmine, where he worked with the team’s defensive and goaltending units in addition to assisting with the day-to-day operations of the program. A former long-stick midfielder with the Griffs, Murphy guided the Knights to the nation’s eighth-ranked scoring defense in 2013 plus the 11th-ranked man-down unit. He also helped Knights netminder Dillon Ward lead the NCAA in save percentage, while ranking third in saves.

The Williamsville, N.Y. native helped lead the Griffs to a MAAC Championship as a team captain in 2012, earning MAAC All-Tournament Team honors. Overall, Murphy appeared in all 14 games as a senior, ranking second on the team with 57 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. During his four-year collegiate career, Murphy played in 36 games, collecting 73 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers.

Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Canisius in 2012. He is currently pursing his master’s in sport administration.
