The Canisius College women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to Monmouth (8-1-0, 2-0-0 MAAC) on Saturday afternoon in Long Branch, N.J. The Griffs fell to 1-2-0 in MAAC play.
The Griffs went down early after giving up a goal in the 17th minute, but rallied after senior forward Brianna Smith scored the game-tying goal just 11 minutes later.
The goal was the 36th of her career, tying her with Kelly Reinwald for second on the all-time goal scoring list.
Monmouth scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 47th minute when Alexis Tamney beat senior goalkeeper Megan Tock after an Alexa Freguletti cross.
Tock, who came into the contest ranked eighth in the nation in total saves, added another ten to that total on Saturday. It was the fourth time this season that she’s recorded eight or more saves.
Canisius will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to play long-time rival Niagara, in the first contest of the annual Battle of the Bridge series of the 2013-14 year. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
