As you know, we spent the weekend in Colorado playing two different teams: Air Force and the University of Denver. Although we let one slip away on Friday night against an in-conference team, we came out on Saturday with a point to prove. Denver was ranked No. 17 in the USCHO poll prior to the game. The final score was 4-1 in our favor.

It’s a tradition to keep the puck after you score your first goal.

A few highlights from the weekend were focused on firsts. Geoff Fortman, Jack Hidi and Josh Kielich played in their first NCAA regular season games. It was great to see what these guys can do on the ice and how they are going to contribute to our team this season. Another first during the trip came from sophomore Mat Backhouse. Backer decided that Saturday night against Denver would be a good time to score his first goal. Here’s a little play-by-play to help visualize exactly what happened, courtesy of the Denver Pioneers website: “Sophomore Mathew Backhouse upped the Canisius lead to 3-0 at 8:25 of the second period with a great individual effort that led to his first career score.  After getting possession of the puck at center ice, Backhouse drove up the right side before slipping a lunging shot past Brittain through the five-hole.” Congrats to Backer on getting the monkey off his back!

This weekend is Halloween. I don’t think there’s any other way we’d like to spend this holiday than by dressing up as hockey players and taking on Miami University. That’s exactly what we will be doing. Two road games against the RedHawks have us all fired up. Even though it’s a short week of practice, before we leave on Thursday morning, you can feel the energy in the dressing room and on the ice.

We’ll check back in after the weekend. Happy Halloween everyone!

P.S – For those of you who don’t know the name Jack Markwardt, he is our equipment manager. He’s basically a one-man army. The guy does it all. It was his birthday on Tuesday (October 29) so if you happen to see him around, let Jack know you understand how difficult it must be to do everything he does at the pre-historic age of 25.

Thanks for reading and once again for your support! Only 10 days until our home opener on November 9 at the Buff State Sports Arena, against the Mercyhurst University. See you there!

Keep your stick on the ice,
Chris Rumble
