Just one day after being named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District II Team, Canisius senior guard Billy Baron has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District I First Team. This marks the second-straight year Baron has been named to the NABC Division I All-District I First Team.

Baron currently ranks fourth in the nation in scoring average with 24.2 points per game. The 2014 Pepsi MAAC Player of the Year, Baron was a unanimous All-MAAC First Team selection as well, and he currently ranks in the top-20 nationally in 10 different statistical categories. He has scored in double figures in 32 of the team’s 33 games this year, highlighted by his career-high 40-point effort at Siena Feb. 16. He also led the team and ranked second in the MAAC in assists per game with 5.2 per contest, and he is just the seventh player in Canisius history to score more than 1,000 career points while dishing out more than 300 career assists. Baron also set the school’s single-season record for 3-point field goals with 103 in 2013-14, and he currently ranks 17th in the country with 3.1 3-pointers per contest.

A finalist for the 2014 Bob Cousy Award, presented annually to the nation’s top Division I point guard, Baron was also named to the 2014 MAAC All-Championship Team on Monday night after he averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 assists, 3.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game in two MAAC Tournament contests last weekend in Springfield, Mass. He scored a team-high 17 points in the Griffs’ quarterfinal win over Siena, which allowed the Blue and Gold to advance to its first MAAC Tournament semifinal game since 2002. In that game, which Canisius lost to Iona 75-72, Baron scored a game-high 23 points and was credited with a game-high five assists as well.

The NABC All-District teams recognize the nation’s best men’s college basketball student-athletes. Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, selected student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America. The 242 student-athletes, from 24 districts, are now eligible for the NABC Coaches’ Division I All-America teams. Baron is one of eight student-athletes from the MAAC to be honored as an all-district selection by the NABC this year and he is the only active two-time first-team selection in District I.

Canisius is 21-12 overall this season, giving the program 41 wins in the last two years, the program’s best two-year stretch since 1993-95. The Griffs went 14-6 in MAAC play in 2013-14, setting a new school record for conference wins in a single season.
