After completing her Canisius career this fall, forward Brianna Smith has been selected to the practice squad for the Western New York Flash of the National Women’s Soccer League.
“This is a huge opportunity for me to be able to train with these girls,” Smith said. “It’s amazing that I’m able to play alongside these outstanding players like Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd and to be able to do it locally is that much more of an honor.”
Smith, who finished her career second on the all-time goal scoring list at Canisius, will train with the club, with the potential to see time on the team’s roster as players leave for international play or in case of injury. To make the team's training roster, Smith made it through three rounds of cuts.
“I’m very excited for Bri to get this opportunity to train and play at the professional level,” said Canisius head coach Jim Wendling. “I think she’s been one of the best forwards we’ve had in my time here and she’s got the talent to play at the highest level and I hope for great success. It’s great for her and it’s great for our program.”
The Flash are the defending regular season champions of the NWSL and open their season on April 13 at the Washington Spirit.
