Two Griffs Named All-MAAC, Hummel Named Coach of the Year

ALBANY, N.Y. ? Senior Morgan Ammons and junior Michelle Godfrey were named to the all-MAAC Second Team at the league's awards banquet on the campus of Siena College Saturday night. Eighth-year coach Cathy Hummel was named the 2008 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year, the second time in her career Hummel has earned the award. Four Golden Griffins also earned MAAC All-Academic Team honors.

Ammons leads the Golden Griffins offense and ranks fifth in the conference at 3.12 kills per set. The Findlay, Ohio native led Canisius in kills in 15 of the 24 matches she's played in and has set a career high in kills twice in 2008, most recently with 21 against Marist (Sept. 21). Earlier this season, Ammons earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Bucknell Invitational and was the MVP at the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament at Hampton University.

Godfrey has led the Canisius defense while also being the team's most productive middle hitter. The 6-foot-3 North Tonawanda, N.Y. native leads the Griffs and ranks fifth in the MAAC in attack percentage (.284). Godfrey also ranks second in the league in blocks per set (1.06). The junior has set career highs in kills (195), attack percentage and blocks (114). Godfrey earned co-MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors Oct. 20, after recording 26 kills and one attack error on 44 attempts in the team's wins over Loyola and Rider (Oct. 18-19).

Hummel also was named the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2003 and becomes the first coach in program history to win the award more than once. The eighth-year coach has led Canisius to a third-place finish in the MAAC standings for the second time in three seasons and to its first appearance in a four-team MAAC Championship for the first time since 1993. Earlier this season, Hummel earned her 100th career win.

Four Golden Griffins earned MAAC All-Academic Team honors ? Ammons, senior Nicole Fafard and sophomores Jasmine Brennan and Renee Lettow. Ammons and Fafard receive the award for the third time while Brennan and Lettow receive the accolade for the first time. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at the institution and hold a cumulative GPAof 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

The No. 3 seed Golden Griffins will take on No. 2 seed and three-time defending champion Siena in the semifinals of the MAAC Championship on Sunday. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
