Baseball Rebounds with 14-8 Win at West Virginia

The Canisius College baseball team ended a three-game losing streak with its second consecutive strong offensive game, picking up a 14-8 win at West Virginia on Monday.

Five Golden Griffins had multiple hits in the game, led by three hits apiece from the top two hitters in the batting order in Branson Joseph and Steve McQuail. Joseph had a team-high four RBIs while McQuail led Canisius (3-6) with three runs scored. Four Griffs hit home runs in the game, with Brian Burton recording three RBIs.

Canisius got on the board first with a third-inning leadoff home run from Ian Choy. West Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the fourth before Canisius gained control of the game with a four-run fifth inning.

All five runs scored with two outs as Connor Burke reached after striking out, but getting to first on an error by the catcher. After a Paul Panik groundout moved Burke to second, four consecutive Griffs reached base. Joseph had a single that scored Burke. McQuail singled through the left side and a double by Kevin Mahoney scored Joseph and put runners at second and third. McQuail scored on a pass ball and Mahoney would score on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.

The Griffs broke the game open with a nine-run seventh inning ? the biggest inning of the season. In the seventh, McQuail started the scoring with a leadoff homer. Shayne Willson had an RBI double, followed by the three-run home run from Burton. Burke and Panik walked, with Joseph hitting his own three-run homer. An RBI single from Kevin Mailloux capped the scoring.

Nathan Linseman started for Canisius, allowing two hits and one run while striking out two in 3.2 innings of work. Josh Marshall relieved Linseman in the fourth, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. Alek Brown and Benson Merritt each threw an inning of relief, with Brown making his first appearance as a Golden Griffin.

Canisius starts its 11-game spring break trip on Friday, when the Griffs start a four-game series at Morehead State.
