Baseball Knocks Out 20 Hits in 11-7 Win at Longwood

The Canisius College baseball team used a season-high 20 hits to pick up an 11-7 victory at Longwood on Thursday, ending a two-game losing streak.

Senior Kevin Mailloux went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, four RBIs and two home runs. Sophomore Brian Burton was 4-for-5 with a homer while Perry Silverman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a homer. Seven Golden Griffins had two or more hits in the game.

Shayne Willson
got Canisius (7-9) on the board in the first with an RBI single, and Longwood (12-7) tied it up in the bottom of the first with a solo homer by Brant Jones.  Mailloux gave Canisius a 3-1 lead with a two-run homer in the third.

The score stayed that way until the sixth when each team scored. Burton hit a solo homer to make it 4-1, and the Lancers responded with a solo homer from Phil Cerreto.

Canisius broke open the game with five runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. Silverman started the rally with a triple and scored on a double from Mailloux. Kevin Mahoney followed with another double to score Mailloux and make it 6-2. After Mahoney stole third, a single from Willson scored Mahoney. Willson would then steal second and a single from Burton put runners on the corners. Ian Choy hit into a double play, scoring Willson. Connor Burke doubled and would score after Alec Cabello reached on an error, pushing the Canisius lead to 9-2.

The Griffs added two more runs in the eighth when Silverman and Mailloux hit back-to-back solo homers.

Longwood scored five times in the eighth off Canisius starter Shane Davis, with a three-run homer from Jonathan Quigley cutting the Canisius lead to 11-7. After two more Longwood runners reached base, Ryan McGorman relieved Davis and recorded two strikeouts to get out of the jam. McGorman pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Davis (2-2) allowed seven runs on 11 hits while walking two and striking out six in his 7.1 innings of work. McGorman threw a scoreless 1.2 innings to pick up his first save of the season.

Canisius starts a four-game series at Bucknell on Friday, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
