Baseball Drops Series Finale to Fairfield

The Canisius College baseball team lost the series finale to Fairfield on Sunday, falling 7-4 at the Demske Sports Complex on Senior Day. The Golden Griffins see their seven-game winning streak come to an end.

Canisius is now 30-20 on the season and 13-8 in the MAAC, sitting alone in third place with three games left in the regular season.

Seniors Kevin Mailloux and Kevin Mahoney each had two hits on the day for the Griffs.  Mahoney led the team with two RBIs, which came on an eighth-inning home run and gave him 20 homers on the season.

Fairfield (20-24, 10-11 MAAC) scored the first seven runs of the game, including five in the third inning. Tucker Nathans had a two-RBI double and Carmine DeVito and Michael Joyce each had an RBI single as the Stags took advantage of two Canisius miscues to score two unearned runs in the inning. Jason Rago had a two-run homer in the fifth to give Fairfield the 7-0 lead.

Canisius chipped away at the deficit, with Brian Burton driving home a run with an RBI groundout in the sixth.  Mahoney's two-run homer in the eighth cut the Fairfield lead to 7-3. The Griffs loaded the bases in the ninth and Ian Choy drew a bases-loaded walk to bring the potential winning run to the plate. Fairfield reliever Justin Servino got Mailloux and Mahoney out on three pitches to close out the game.

Canisius starter Mike Goemans (6-4) took the loss. The junior allowed seven runs, five earned, and 11 hits while striking out four in six innings. Senior Aaron Boag threw three scoreless innings of relief. Fairfield's Scott Gussaroff (3-3) picked up the win by allowing four runs in 8.1 innings.

Canisius ends the regular season with a three-game regular season series against rival Niagara University. The three-game series starts with a doubleheader on Thursday, with first pitch at the Demske Sports Complex set for 12 p.m.
