Eighteen Griffs Earn Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Honors

A school-record 18 Canisius College hockey players were honored on Thursday for their work off the ice, being named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team.

The 18 selections to the academic squad are the most in the program's history. The previous high was 15, set in three different seasons.

Senior Spencer Churchill highlighted the Griffs' selections, earning the distinction during all four of his years with the team.

Senior John Patera plus juniors Dave Cianfrini, Chris Forsman and Andrew Loewen each earned the accolade for the third in their careers. Loewen was also honored with ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District accolades during the 2008-09 season.

Juniors Ryan Klusendorf and Peter MacDougall plus sophomores Cory Conacher, Pat Kenney, Phil Rauch and Matt Zuke all picked up the honor for the second time.

Seven different Canisius student-athletes were named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team for the first time, including juniors Carl Hudson and Jason Weeks, sophomores Taylor Anderson, Derek Danowski, Eric Rex and Vincent Scarsella in addition to freshman Scott Moser.

To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team, an individual must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in each academic semester during the 2008-09 year.

Canisius returns 23 letterwinners from the 2008-09 season, including 94 percent of its scoring and all three goaltenders.
