Senior Allyson Severyn was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Libero of the Week by the conference today while freshman Lauren Siebert earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors. Severyn earns MAAC Libero of the Week honors for the fourth time this season, and Siebert is the first Golden Griffin freshman to be honored in 2012.
Severyn averaged 7.38 digs per set in two Canisius road victories last weekend while posting a perfect 1.000 service reception percentage. The Lancaster, N.Y. native recorded a career-high 38 digs in the five-set win at Loyola and also had 22 digs in a sweep at Rider. Severyn also did not commit an error on 58 service receptions to go along with three service aces.
This is the seventh time in the 5-foot-7 libero's career that she has earned a weekly award from the MAAC. Severyn has earned the award four teams this season with no other MAAC libero winning the award more than twice in 2012. Severyn enters the week ranked second in the MAAC and 11th nationally in digs per set (5.68).
Siebert took advantage of her start in Sunday's five-set win at Loyola as the freshman had 14 kills and just one attack error to post a .500 attack percentage. Siebert also had eight blocks in the match. The 5-foot-10 middle hitter entered the match with 20 kills and 11 blocks in her previous 27 sets played.
Canisius, which is in a three-way tie for first place in the MAAC standings with an 11-3 record in league play, needs one win to clinch a spot in the 2012 MAAC Championship (Nov. 17-18 at Fairfield University). The Griffs return home for its final two matches in the Koessler Athletic Center this weekend. Canisius faces Manhattan on Saturday, and Saint Peter's the following day on Senior Day. Match time each day is set for 2 p.m.
