"We played very well tonight," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "We had excellent goaltending and got a huge power-play goal late in the game. In a chippy contest, it sends a message to be ready for tomorrow for another intense battle."
Sophomore Logan Roe matched a career high with two points, netting his first collegiate goal to go along with an assist. Junior Kyle Gibbons and senior Preston Shupe also tallied goals for the Griffs in the winning effort.
Roe gave the Griffs a lead it would not relinquish with a goal 15:54 into the contest. Junior Patrick Sullivan won an offensive-zone faceoff and sophomore winger Doug Beck chipped the puck back to the point. Roe then fired a shot on net that hit the Connecticut goaltender and bounced into back of the net for the defender's first career goal.
The 1-0 lead stood until the final minutes when Gibbons added an insurance goal on the power play with 3:37 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Mitch McCrank sent a shot toward goal but the puck was blocked in front. Gibbons corralled the loose puck and sent a wrist shot into the net from the slot for the 2-0 lead. Beck registered his second assist of the night on the tally.
The Griffs then sealed the win when Shupe scored an empty-net goal with 46 seconds remaining. Senior Torrey Lindsay and Roe both registered assists for the 3-0 final score.
Connecticut outshot the Griffs, 36-24, on the night but could not solve Capobianco in net. Canisius was 1-for-3 on the power play, while killing both of Connecticut's power plays in the win.
Canisius looks for the sweep against the Huskies tomorrow night with game time slated for 7:05 p.m.
