Storrs, Conn. - For the second-straight night, junior goaltender Tony Capobianco stole the show for the Canisius College hockey team, matching a career high with 45 saves in a 3-1 victory against Connecticut. The win improves the Griffs' record to 5-6-4 on the season and 4-2-2 against Atlantic Hockey foes, while Connecticut drops to 4-7-1 and 3-6-0 in league play.

"It was a great road sweep," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "We battled hard and got great goaltending and timely scoring. Tony Capobianco, who has been playing great all year, really took his game to another level the last two weeks and that has been a huge boost for us."

Senior Preston Shupe, junior Kyle Gibbons and sophomore Cody Freeman each netted goals for the Griffs on the offensive end.

After playing more than 30 minutes of scoreless action, Canisius was the first school to break through with a tally with 8:51 left in the second. On a rush, junior Ryan Bohrer found Freeman open down low and the sophomore then made a move and finished high for his first goal of the season. Sophomore Braeden Rigney also added an assist for the 1-0 lead.

The Griffs then stretched their advantage to two when Shupe netted his fourth goal of the season with 2:17 left in the second. Senior Torrey Lindsay found his classmate in the slot from the corner and Shupe snuck the puck past the Connecticut netiminder for the 2-0 lead. Junior defender Ben Danford also registered an assist on the tally.

Connecticut, however, answered right back, scoring its first goal of the weekend just 23 seconds later. Tyler Bouchard ripped a shot into the back of the net from the slot to bring the Huskies back within one, 2-1.

The Griffs defense would clamp down from there, not allowing the Huskies to find the equalizing tally. Capobianco stopped all 12 shots he saw during the third frame and Gibbons added an empty-net goal - with assists to sophomore Mitch McCrank and Danford - as the Griffs completed the 3-1 win and the two-game weekend sweep.

Connecticut finished the game with a 46-15 advantage in shots on the night. Neither team scored on the power play with the Griffs going 0-for-1 with the extra man and killing both Husky power plays.

Canisius is off until Dec. 18 when they travel to face league rival Mercyhurst. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
