The Canisius softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end on Friday with a pair of losses on the first day of the Lady Pirate Classic at Hampton University in Hampton, Va. The Golden Griffins lost their first game to Delaware by a score of 10-0 in five innings and then fell in the nightcap by a 6-1 count to Central Connecticut State. The Blue and Gold is now 7-3 on the year.
In the game one loss to the Blue Hens (11-3), Delaware jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then broke the game open with a six-run third. Delaware added two more runs in the fourth frame to earn the five-inning run-rule victory. The Blue Hens pounded out 11 hits while holding Canisius to just three base knocks. Sophomore Robin Kennery, senior Stephanie Pfentner and freshman Tori Nappo all had base hits for Canisius in the losing effort. Canisius pitcher Amanda Baun took the loss in the circle after she allowed 10 runs, seven earned, on 11 hits while walking one. She is now 3-1 on the year.
In the second game of the day, Central Connecticut State scored three runs in the top of the first and added two more runs in the top of the third frame en route to a 6-1 victory. The Griffs managed just four hits in the game two loss, with freshman Meghan Cuda going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Freshman Alexis Roman added a base hit to the Griffs' cause, as did junior pitcher Jen Consaul. Consaul took the loss in the circle after she allowed six runs on 13 hits to go with two strikeouts and three walks.
The Griffs will close out their weekend stay at the Lady Pirate Classic on Saturday when the team takes on Maryland Eastern Shore and the host Hampton squad. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m.
