Golf Team Takes Fourth at MAAC Golf Championship

Canisius College senior golfer Joe Vogl posted a career-low 70 in his final college event and the Golden Griffins carded a team score of 301 to finish fourth at the third and final round of the 2013 MAAC Golf Championship at the Disney Palm Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The fourth-place finish is the best finish for the Blue and Gold as a team since 1997, when the Griffs took third.

Vogl, who shot a one-over par score of 73 on Friday in round one, came back and posted his second career round under par on Sunday with his 70, which allowed him to place fifth on the final leaderboard. He had seven birdies on his final scorecard, including one on the par-4 18th hole. Vogl shot 218 for the 54-hole event, which was two over par for the tournament.

Canisius senior Michael Carrig posted his career-best finish at the MAAC Championship by tying for 16th with his three-round score of 230. Freshman Hunter Sagar took 21st with his tournament score of 233, highlighted by his 74 on Sunday and senior Mike Spiotta placed 22nd in the field. He shot a 76 in the final round.

Loyola (Md.) shot a team score of 283 on Sunday to claim its sixth-straight MAAC championship with a tournament score of 881, one stroke better than Iona, which led through the first 36 holes. Fairfield's Steve Burak posted a 68 in the final round and won the McLeod Trophy as the MAAC's top individual champion with his 54-hole score of 208.

Carrig and Spiotta were named to the 2012-13 MAAC All-Academic Team on Sunday byt the conference office at the end of the tournament. Carrig holds a 3.48 grade point average as a forensic accounting major at the College while Spiotta boasts a 3.56 GPA in business administration. Both student-athletes will receive their undergraduate degrees from Canisius in May. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must hold a GPA of 3.20 or better on a 4.0 scale and be at least a sophomore in standing at their respecitve school.
