Sophomore defender Alex De Carolis of the Canisius College men’s soccer team was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team, announced by the conference on Monday.
One of only two underclassmen selected to the team by a vote of the league’s coaches, De Carolis totaled seven points, three goals and one assist in his rookie campaign last season. The defender also helped anchor four shutouts on the year, just one shy of the program’s record.
The Sarnia, Ontario native was selected to the MAAC All-Rookie Team following the 2012 season in addition to All-Western New York Third Team accolades by Upper 90 Magazine.
As a team, Canisius was slated to finish seventh in the annual coaches poll. Monmouth was picked to win the league title and was followed by Iona, Fairfield, Niagara, Siena and Quinnipiac. Marist, Saint Peter’s, Manhattan and Rider followed the Griffs in the poll and were slated to finish eighth through 11th.
The Griffs open the 2013 campaign on Friday with a road contest at Bucknell. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
