Five former Canisius College standouts were named to the 51-man Canadian National Team training roster for the 2014 FIL World Championship, announced by the Canadian Lacrosse Association on Monday. Dan Coates ‘11, Angus Dineley ’07, Adam Jones ’11, Kevin Ross ’07 and Matt Vinc ’05 were all selected from a list of 97 applicants and are set to compete for a final roster spot.

Canisius and Canadian National Team Head Coach Randy Mearns will oversee a selection camp from Oct. 11 to Oct. 14 on the campus of Canisius College. The national team will also play scrimmages against the Griffs and additional NCAA teams in Denver and Robert Morris.

“Getting from 97 applications to the 51 Team Canada invitee list was certainly no easy task and when you look at the quality and character of the selection camp list, our job doesn’t get any easier," said Mearns. "I am excited to bring this group together in a few weeks and I know we’ll have many tough decisions to make. In my experience with the national program, I think it is safe to say that this is the deepest, most qualified group of Canadian Field Lacrosse players trying to earn a spot to represent Canada in the World Championship next July.”

Coates anchored the Canisius defense during his four-year collegiate career. The St. Catharines, Ontario native became the first Griff defender to earn first-team All-MAAC accolades during the 2011 season. He led Canisius with 52 ground balls, while placing second on the team with 18 caused turnovers. A 2011 first-round selection of the Colorado Mammoth of the NLL, Coates also led all MAAC defenders with 4.33 ground balls per game in 2011 and totaled 113 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers during his career.

Dineley played for the Griffs from 2004 to 2007. He appeared in 39 games with 28 starting assignments and ranks sixth in school history with 306 career saves, fourth with a .528 career save percentage and second with a 9.63 goals against average. During the 2005 campaign, Dineley recorded a save percentage of .595, the ninth-best mark in the NCAA.

The program's first All-American in 2008, Jones helped the Griffs to their first MAAC title the same season. A three-time All-MAAC First Team selection, he ranks 10th in the school's record book with 129 career points and sixth with 98 career goals. A 2011 first-round selection of the Colorado, Jones has shined in his first two seasons in the NLL. The 2012 NLL Rookie of the Year, Jones has accumulated 148 points, 62 goals and 86 assists in his two years with the Mammoth.

A 2007 NLL first-round draft pick, Ross spent the 2013 season with Philadelphia, totaling 53 points, 20 goals and 33 assists. He graduated from Canisius ranked fourth in school history with 185 points, second with 126 goals and eighth with 59 assists. A three-time first-team All-MAAC selection, Ross was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year in 2006.

Vinc, a member of the 2006 gold medal-winning team and the 2010 squad that took silver, led the Griffs in ground balls in three different seasons and ranks fifth all-time with 258 career ground balls. A 2004 and 2005 All-MAAC selection on defense, Vinc was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2005 NLL Draft as a goalkeeper and is currently a member of the Rochester Knighthawks. He has helped lead the Knighthawks to the past two NLL Championships.

The FIL World Championship will be held in Denver from July 10-19, 2014. Canada claimed the 2006 world championship with the United States taking the 2010 crown.
