Three Canisius women’s basketball players were named to the Preseason All-Big Four Team on Monday, announced at First Niagara Center. Senior Jamie Ruttle was voted to the First Team while senior Jen Morabito and junior Kayla Hoohuli were voted to the Second Team. A group of local media and sports information directors voted on the teams.
Ruttle, a preseason All-MAAC Third-Team Selection, made 25 starts last season and averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-3 forward enters the season with 882 points, the highest total by a Canisius post player entering her senior season in the last 20 years. Ruttle, a unanimous selection to the First Team, earns All-Big Four First-Team honors for the second consecutive season.
Morabito made 47 3-pointers and shot 37.9 percent from behind the arc as a junior when she averaged 5.5 points in 31 games. The Binghamton, N.Y. native is second in program history in career 3-point field goal percentage and sixth with 158 treys made her in career.
Hoohuli was named to the All-Big Four Second Team for the second consecutive season. The 5-foot-7 guard made a team-high 28 starts in 2012-13 and drained 45 3-pointers last season. She is the sixth Golden Griffin to make 100 3-pointers in her first two seasons and also has drawn a charge in 27 games in her career.
Canisius opens the 2013-14 schedule on Friday, Nov. 8, when the Golden Griffins host the University of Detroit. Tipoff in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m.
