  • Canisius plays its first road game of the 2013-14 season at No. 20/18 Michigan State on Thursday night.
  • The Golden Griffins and the Spartans are meeting for the first time in program history.
  • Canisius is playing its fifth game in program history against a team from the Big Ten. The Griffs have faced Michigan once, Ohio State twice and Wisconsin once.

  • First-year assistant coach Cetera Washington is returning to her alma mater on the staff with the Canisius women’s basketball team.
  • Canisius opened the season with a 77-67 win over  the University of Detroit in the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday night. Canisius opened the season with a win for the second consecutive season.
  • Senior Jamie Ruttle was named to the preseason All-MAAC Third Team. It is the third time in Ruttle’s career that she has been selected to a preseason All-MAAC Team.
  • Canisius was picked to finish sixth of 11 teams in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
  • At Big Four Media Day on Oct. 14, Ruttle was voted to the All-Big Four First Team while senior Jen Morabito and junior Kayla Hoohuli were each voted to the All-Big Four Second Team.

HISTORY VS. RANKED TEAMS

  • Canisius is playing a ranked team for the eighth time in program history.
  • The Golden Griffins last played a ranked team on Dec. 10, 2011, when Canisius played at No. 13 Ohio State.
  • Canisius is 0-7 all-time against ranked teams.
  • The most notable game in program history against a ranked team came in the first round of the NCAA Tournament when Canisius faced No. 1 seed Duke in Chapel Hill, N.C. 

NOTES FROM FRIDAY NIGHT’S OPENER

  • Canisius opened the season with a win for the second consecutive year.
  • Canisius wins its home opener for the second consecutive year and for the sixth time in the last 10 years.
  • Canisius drained 11 3-pointers in Friday night’s win over Detroit. The Griffs made 11 3-pointers in two games last season.
  • The Griffs had 21 assists on 27 made baskets for a percentage of 77.8. In the last two seasons, Canisius has an assist on 76.5 percent of their baskets.
  • The game featured 81 possessions, more than any Canisius game last season.
  • Senior Jamie Ruttle scored a game-high 19 points. Ruttle didn’t score more than 18 points in any game last season.
  • Senior Jen Morabito drained four 3-pointers, posting the 26th game of her career with three or more 3-pointers.
  • Freshman Lauren D’Hont scored 12 points in 25 minutes off the bench, scoring the most points by a Canisius freshman in the season opener since Micayla Drysdale to open the 2007-08 campaign.
  • Sophomore Crystal Porter made her first career start.
  • Redshirt junior Courtney VandeBovenkamp played for the first time since the 2012 MAAC Championship. VandeBovenkamp missed the 2012-13 season with a knee injury.

WASHINGTON COMES BACK TO EAST LANSING IN BLUE AND GOLD

  • First-year assistant coach Cetera Washington is returning to her alma mater on the staff with the Canisius women’s basketball team.
  • Washington graduated from Michigan State in 2011after a four-year playing career for the Spartans. Washington appeared in 135 career games and the team played in three NCAA Tournaments, including an appearance in the Sweet 16 .
  • The Kalamazoo, Mich. native graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications and then earned a Master’s degree in youth development.
