The Canisius College women’s basketball team notched its first conference win of the season in a 48-47 victory over Saint Peter’s (2-11, 1-3 MAAC) on Sunday afternoon.

The Griffs trailed 36-34 with 8:15 to go in the game, but used a 9-1 run with a pair of buckets each from senior Jen Lennox and junior Kayla Hoohuli, to take the lead for good.

Hoohuli finished with a game-high 15 points, while Lennox tallied a season-high 14.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, with Canisius shooting just 32 percent, and going 1-of-9 from behind the arc, but the Griffs managed to head to the locker room with a 20-16 lead.

13 of Canisius’ 20 first half points came off 11 Peacocks’ turnovers, while the Griffs turned the ball over a season-low seven times in the contest.

The Griffs started the second half 1-of-6 from behind the arc, but would close making three of their final five, including one by senior Jamie Ruttle that would put the Griffs up four with 1:30 remaining.

“I thought when we weren’t shooting well we got tentative,” said head coach Terry Zeh. “Everyone in the gym knows we’re a good shooting team, so when we’re not making them it gets tense because everyone is hanging on it. But it was nice to see Jamie make one late and Kayla as well because they need to take those.”

Following a pair of free throws from Saint Peter’s Antonia Smith, Ruttle answered with a contested shot in the paint to keep the lead at four with 43 seconds to go. Ruttle finished the game with nine points.

Aziza May hit a deep three to cut the Canisius lead to one on the ensuing possession, and promptly fouled sophomore Tiahana Mills. Mills missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but Canisius got the defensive stop they needed to close out the contest.

The Griffs improved to 5-9 (1-4 MAAC) with the win and will travel to face Monmouth on Friday. That game is scheduled to top at noon.

GAME NOTES: Sophomore Jasmine Mungo pulled down a career-high eight rebounds… Canisius was outrebounded in a MAAC game for the first time this season (37-31), but earned a five board advantage in the second half after being beaten 22-11 on the glass in the first.
