Canisius Hall of Famer John Schaefer Passes Away

Former Canisius baseball player John Schaefer '60, passed away Saturday, Jan. 4. Schaefer was inducted into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.

Shaefer roamed the outfield for the Golden Griffins from 1958-60. In 1958, he hit .333 for the season, but his best year in a Canisius uniform came in 1959. That season, Schaefer hit .419 under the direction of head coach Dave Markey. In his senior year, the Blue and Gold posted a 10-5 record, including a 7-1 mark in the Western New York Intercollegiate Baseball Conference.

The Schaefer family will receive relatives and friends at the Wendel & Loecher, Inc. Funderal Home, located at 27 Aurora Street in Lancaster Tuesday from 3-8 p.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Lancaster, Wednesday morning at 9:30.
