The Canisius College men’s lacrosse team named its team captains for the 2014 season, announced by head coach Randy Mearns on Friday. Seniors Kevin Collins and DJ Giacobbo and juniors Adam Donner, Tim Edwards and Alex Govenettio are set to serve as captains for the 2014 campaign.

"Leadership is the key to any good team at this level," Mearns said. "The coaching staff is really excited with the five captains and what they will bring to make our team successful. The five all have valuable playing experience, having won a conference championship and advancing to an NCAA Tournament in their careers. They have the respect of their teammates and bring the work ethic, discipline and commitment - both on and off the field - that is essential for our program to succeed this season."

The team’s long-stick midfielder, Collins has appeared in 25 games with the Griffs during his two seasons at Canisius. He has totaled 34 ground balls and eight caused turnovers to go along with three career tallies.

A fifth-year senior, Giacobbo has played in 32 career games with 13 starting assignments on defense. The Athabasca, Alberta native has collected 31 ground balls and nine caused turnovers during his collegiate tenure, including career highs with 15 ground balls and eight caused turnovers in eight games as a junior.

A second-team All-MAAC selection in 2013, Donner started all 13 games on defense for the Griffs last season. He led the team with 11 caused turnovers, while also collecting 18 ground balls. In 23 career games, Donner has totaled 28 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.

Edwards is a two-time All-MAAC selection, including a first-team honoree as a sophomore, while also being named the conference’s Rookie of the Year in 2012. The Jamesville, N.Y. native led the Griffs with 39 points, 20 goals and 19 assists last season and has totaled 71 points, 33 goals and 38 assists in his two years on campus. He also owns a .485 face-off winning percentage to go along with 51 career ground balls.

Govenettio has appeared in 19 career games in net with 12 starting assignments. The junior started 11 contests last season with a 12.16 goals against average and 83 total saves. The Derby, N.Y. native is entering his second season as the team’s starting netminder in 2014.

All five players played a key role in helping the Griffs to their second MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012. Canisius returns nine starters and 25 letterwinners from the 2013 squad.
