Canisius freshman Zach Lewis has been named to the 2013-14 MAAC All-Rookie Team, the conference office announced today. Lewis is one of five freshmen in the MAAC to be named to the rookie all-star unit and he is the eighth player in Canisius history to earn a spot in the MAAC All-Rookie Team. In addition, he is the first Golden Griffin to earn conference all-rookie honors since 2006-07.

Lewis ended the regular season ranked fourth on the team in scoring average at 9.7 points per game to go with 2.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per contest. The first true freshman to play for second-year head coach Jim Baron at Canisius, the Windsor, Conn. native played in 29 games this season, making 16 starts. He scored a season-high 25 points in the Blue and Gold’s win over Monmouth Jan. 12, where he made seven 3-point field goals, a school record for a Canisius freshman in a game. He was good for 10 or more points 12 times this season and he made multiple 3-point field goals in 18 games. He closed out the regular season ranked third among all MAAC freshmen in 3-point field goal percentage at 38.9 percent and his 39 steals this year are the most for a Canisius freshman since Frank Turner had 49 steals during the 2006-07 campaign.

Joining Lewis on the MAAC All-Rookie Team is Marist’s Khallid Hart, Rider’s Jimmie Taylor III and Siena’s Lavon Long and Marquis Wright. These five players are now eligible to be named the 2013-14  Rookie of the Year, which is also voted on by the league’s head coaches. The Rookie of the Year will be announced at the MAAC Postseason Awards Show on Friday, March 7 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The men’s basketball team will play No. 5 seed Siena on Saturday, March 8 in the MAAC Championship quarterfinal round at MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass., with tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the audio call can be heard on AM-1400 in Buffalo and through the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network at GoGriffs.com.
