The Canisius College track team took home a pair of individual victories at the ROC City Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Michael Anvelt took home the top-spot in the 5000-meter run, while freshman A.J. Stuver finished first in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Anvelt finished the event in 15:19.78, marking the second-straight week the Griffs have taken the men’s 5000-meter run. Freshman Jeff Antolos won the 5k last week at the University of Rochester Invitational.
Following Anvelt’s performance, Stuver won the steeplechase in a time of 9:53.55, just under 42 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.
"Mike and A.J. had similar races in that each of them was leading by a large margin early on," said head coach Nate Huckle. "They both did an exceptional job of staying focused and hitting their goal paces to run personal-best times and seal the wins."
On the women’s side, the Griffs’ team of freshmen Haley Keene, Katie Kerr and Taylor Marino, sophomore Robin Wagner and juniors Jamie Wallace and Brandi Pettit raced to a second place finish.
"The women came back strong from their primary events to put together an outstanding relay," Huckle said. "They competed well and they realized that they have the potential to run much faster at the MAAC Championship in three weeks."
The women did most of their damage in the 1500-meter run, with four finishers in the top-14. Keene led the way for the Griffs, finishing the event in a time of 4:59.73, just ahead of junior Jamie Wallace (5:00.48), who finished eighth. Junior Brandi Pettit (11th) and freshman Macey Walker (14th) rounded out the field for the Griffs.
The men also had a large contingent in the 1500, with sophomore Travis Jordon at the front of the pack in a third-place finish (3:57.96). Freshman Xavier Sauvageau (4:01.20) finished fifth, followed closely by fellow freshman Jeff Antolos (4:02.46), in a sixth-place finish. Junior Chad Maloy took 11th in the event.
Junior Morgan Atkins also had a strong race for the Griffs, racing to a time of 19:26.15 in a seventh place finish of the 5k.
The Griffs also had a pair of runners compete in the 10k. Juniors Joe Schnitter and Andrew Coy placed fifth and sixth respectively with times of 34:00.70 and 35:45.09.
The Blue and Gold will return to action on Friday, April 18, in the Upstate Challenge at Buffalo.
