The Canisius College rowing team has added Madeline Kurka to its recuriting class for next season, head coach Joel Furtek announced on Wednesday.
Kurka, an Austin, Texas native, becomes the seventh Griff to join the program for the 2014-15 season after the program added six in the fall signing period.
"We're thrilled that Madeline has decided to join us as a Griff," Furtek said. "She has excelled at a nationally-ranked high school and found a great fit for her academic interests here at Canisius. She also found an immediate connection with our great team. We see great things for her as an individual, as a member of our outstanding class of 2018, and with Griffs Rowing as we enter the next stage in the development of our program. Welcome, Madeline!"
Kurka rowed out of the Felesha Thrash's Texas Rowing Center and attends the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy in Austin, which ranked 33rd nationally in Newsweek's 2013 rankings.
The 5-foot-7 Kurka placed third in her age group at the Southwest Ergometer Amateur Tournament and helped her team win the overall points trophy at the Heart of Texas regatta.
Kurka also was part of the first team from the Texas Rowing Club to race at the San Diego Crew Classic this spring.
Kurka joins Mackenzie App, Patti Beaulieu, Annie DeCosta-Klippa, Tessa Glavin, Grace Horner and Josie Sheftic as the newest members of the Griffs, who all signed with the program this fall.
