Junior Rohn Pierce (Lockport, N.Y.) is one of 36 baseball players from across the country selected as a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award.

The award is named after former Auburn Tiger star pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All American, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All Star. Like Olson, these players have elevated their game to an elite level and in many instances their team has mirrored their success as a direct result.

In 15 starts, the Capital One Second-Team Academic All-American posted an 11-3 record with a 2.18 ERA in 111.2 innings. The unanimous selection as the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Pierce is one of seven pitchers in the country with 11 wins, 110 innings pitched and an ERA under 2.50. The junior righthander threw at least six innings in all 15 starts and did not walk more than two batters in a start, averaging 1.29 walks per nine innings. A two-time MAAC Pitcher of the Week, Pierce opened the season by defeating No. 5 NC State and Carlos Rodon by throwing seven shutout innings. For his efforts, Pierce was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week.

Pierce leads the MAAC in victories (ranking 12th nationally), ERA, innings pitched, opponents batting average (.211) and walks allowed per nine innings.

Prior to the 2014 season, Pierce was 5-4 with a 4.92 ERA in 128 innings pitched.

Finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6, at the beginning of Super Regional action. The winner of the 2014 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series, which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park.
