Canisius women's lacrosse incoming freshman Rebecca Van Laeken played 25 minutes in goal and helped the North All-American Girls team to an 18-11 victory over the South squad in the 2014 Under Armour All-America Classic July 12, in Towson Md. Van Laeken, who was credited with the win in goal, is the first Canisius player to be honored as an Under Armour High School All-American.
The Canandaigua, N.Y., native was one of four net minders to be named to the Under Armour All-America team. She played for the varsity girls lacrosse team at Canandaigua and she is also the goaltender for the Relentless Hustle club team, based out of Rochester, N.Y. That team won the Club Lacrosse National Championship in 2013.
Van Laeken is one of 10 incoming freshmen that Canisius head coach Scott Teeter will add to his roster for the 2015 campaign. Canisius, the four-time defending MAAC champion, returns 21 letterwinners from the 2014 squad that went 12-7 overall and 6-2 in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins saw their season end May 9, with a 9-4 loss to Pennsylvania in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
