Sosa to Play for Puerto Rico in FIBA World Cup

Former Canisius men’s basketball player Isaac Sosa will play for Team Puerto Rico in the 2014 FIBA World Cup, which is scheduled to be held Aug. 30-Sept. 14 in Spain. The tournament, which was previously known as FIBA World Championships, features 24 teams split into four groups of six. The winner of the 2014 FIBA World Cup will earn an automatic berth into the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Sosa, who currently plays professionally in the Argentina LigaA, played for the Golden Griffins during the 2012-13 season. The Guaynabo, Puerto Rico native played in 34 games for the Blue and Gold where he averaged 11.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Sosa, who earned his degree in finance from Canisius, shot 40.9 percent from 3-point range during his one season on Main Street and he ended the 2012-13 campaign with 95 makes from behind the arc, which set the school’s record for made 3-point field goals in a single season.

Puerto Rico qualified for the 2014 FIBA World Cup after placing in the top-four at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championships, which was held last September in Venezuela. The Puerto Rico team is in “Group B” in this year’s FIBA World Cup, where the team will play Argentina, Croatia, Greece, Philippines and Senegal on pool-play. The top four teams from each of the four groups will advance to a single-elimination “Round of 16” and the finals are set to be played Sept. 14 in Spain. Puerto Rico’s first game of the tournament will be against Argentina Aug. 30.
