Senior diver Eddie Quarantillo recently competed in the AT&T National Diving Championships, which took place from Aug. 12 to Aug. 17 in Knoxville, Tenn., at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. The event featured 125 of the best divers in the United States, vying for 10 national championships.

This was the first time in program history that one of the Canisius divers has qualified for the premier event on the national level. Qualifications for this event are based on an overall performance in previous competitions and placement in the U.S. National Preliminary Meets. Quarantillo competed in the U.S. National Preliminary Zone B meet, which was held in Coral Springs, Fla., on July 18 – 20.

Quarantillo qualified in the Men’s 3-meter individual event and finished 26th in the country with a final score of 306.55.

Prior to competing in the Diving Championships, Quarantillo trained at the Indiana Diving Academy’s summer camp, Ripfest. The curriculum at Ripfest was developed by John Wingfield, the head coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic diving team.

Canisius diving coach Ian O’Rourke had this to say in regards to Quarantillo’s success, "The Ripfest experience definitely helped Eddie prepare for nationals and gave him the confidence to compete on the national level which is new territory for our program. This experience has set the tone for training in preparation for the MAAC Championships in mid-February and another run at qualifying to the NCAA Zone Championships scheduled for March 2015 at Rutgers University and I truly believe that the sky is the limit for him and this team."

The Swimming and Diving team will open up the 2014-2015 season on Oct. 17, as the team will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to take on Marist at 10:00 a.m.
