Andy Smith Named Chair of NCAA Subcommittee

Canisius College director of sports medicine Andy Smith has been appointed the chairperson of the NCAA's Drug Education and Testing subcommittee, a branch of the Committee on Competitve Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS). The Drug Education and Testing subcommittee is made up of 20 appointed voting members from NCAA member institutions.

Smith has two years remaining to his appointment to the CSMAS and will take over the chairperson role in September. The mission of the CSMAS is to provide expertise and leadership to the NCAA in order to promote a healthy and safe environment for the nearly 400,000 student-athletes within the NCAA through research, education, collaboration and policy development. CSMAS committee members are appointed certified athletic trainers, team physicians and sports medicine specialists for NCAA member institutions at various levels.

A 1989 graduate of Canisius College, Smith oversees coverage for all 17 Canisius teams, working directly with the women's lacrosse and cross country programs. He also administers and oversees the student-athlete accident insurance and NCAA and Canisius College Drug Testing programs. The Western New York native also serves as an adjunct professor for the College's athletic training education program. His certifications include BOC Certification, Clinical Instructor Educator and National Safety Council Instructor of CPR, First Aid and AED.
