Griffs Sweep SUNY Fredonia in Final Dual

The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the regular season with a sweep of SUNY Fredonia at the Steele Hall Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffin men dominated the host Blue Devils, 140-83, including first-place performances. In the women's race, the Griff women escaped with a 127-116 victory over SUNY Fredonia.

"Our teams showed great progress in all aspects of their races," said head coach Scott Vanderzell. "The men had a very strong showing in their final dual of the season. Battling in every race and on the boards, the women pulled out a close meet through team work and tremendous compete in events."

The Golden Griffin men swept the 200-yard medley relay race to open Saturday's action. The team of freshman Garrett Graesser, sophomore Nick Sereday, and seniors Tyler Carver and Matt Moessinger swam to a first-place finish (1:37.61) followed by the team of senior Mike Disco, and sophomores Tyler Evans, Sean Stegemoller and Shane Donovan in second (1:41.37).

In the first individual race of the afternoon, the Griffs swept the 1000-yard freestyle. Freshman Spencer Bray (9:51.49), junior Corey Petrie (10:18.88), and senior Robby Novak (10:28.16) occupied the top-three spots respectively. Later in the day, Bray would swim to a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.80).

The duo of sophomore Sean Wurster (1:47.29) and sophomore Jake Pisano (1:49.41) captured first- and second-place finishes. Pisano also recorded a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.53).

Senior Shawn Parkhurst touched first in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.30) and 500-yard freestyle (4:43.66).

After missing the first half of the season, senior Matt Moessinger secured his first top-finish of the season in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.75). Sophomore Sam Hansen followed behind Moessinger in second with a time of 2:06.95.

Including a strong performance in the medley relay to open the day, Sereday also placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (49.27).

The group of Bray (1:58.80), Evans (2:04.03), junior Andrew Edbauer (2:05.28), and Graesser (2:06.55) dominated the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in the top-four slots.

On the diving boards, sophomore Eddie Quarantillo was the lone Griff to capture a top-three finish in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. The sophomore snagged the top spot in the 1-meter event with a score of 276.05.

After Fredonia State swam to a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, junior Anna Schena (10:59.13) and Leah Villari (11:12.86) finished one-two in the 1000-yard freestyle to give the Griffs the lead.

Sophomore Marissa Oakey touched ahead of two Fredonia State swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.57) to take the event. In addition, Oakey finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:17.98).

In the closet race of the day, junior Kelli Graber and Clare Battaglia finished in the top two slots of the 50-yard freestyle. The race between the two Griffs for first was separated by three-tenths of a second with Graber in first (25.79) and Battaglia (25.81). Battaglia recorded her first top-finish of the day in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.39), her 17th first-place finish of the season.

Schena (2:16.22), freshman Alicia Wheeler (2:20.02), and sophomore Sara Nungesser (2:24.30) swept the 200-yard butterfly, respectively.

In diving, freshman Audrey Mulhisen broke her own school record in the 3-meter event with a score of 259.40. The freshman previously set the record (257.55) in the team's dual against SUNY Geneseo on Dec. 8.

The Griffs secured their dual win in the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Battaglia, sophomore Erika Tozser, Graber, and Oakey grabbed a first-place finish with both Blue Devil squads touching next.

The Blue and Gold will now focus their preparation on the MAAC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships to be held Feb. 14-16 at the ECC Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.
