Freshman Alex Godzak (Syracuse, N.Y.) has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball on Monday. Godzak is the first Golden Griffin to earn the honor since Sean Jamieson on March 28, 2011.
Godzak threw seven no-hit innings as part of the first Division I, nine-inning no-hitter in program history in an 8-0 win over Iona College on Friday afternoon. Godzak overcame walks to the second and third batters of the game before retiring the next 20 batters he faced as the Syracuse, N.Y. native also struck out six in his seven innings of work. The 5-foot-9 lefty combined with sophomore Rohn Pierce and junior Jon Fitzsimmons to no-hit the Gaels, the first no-hitter by Canisius since 1993.
In seven appearances (five starts), Godzak is 4-1 with a 2.48 earned run average. Godzak has 14 walks and 28 strikeouts in 36.1 innings while holding opponents to a .200 batting average.
Canisius returns to the field for a doubleheader at Cornell University on Wednesday. First pitch in Ithaca, N.Y. is set for 2 p.m.
