The national leader in save percentage, sophomore netminder Kayla Scully of the Canisius College women’s lacrosse team was honored for the first time on Monday as the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Scully anchored the Canisius defense to a pair of conference wins during the week, posting a 4.50 goals against average and .667 save percentage against Siena and Fairfield. The sophomore opened the week by holding the Saints to three goals on Wednesday, while recording six saves in the win.

The netminder then stopped a career-best 12 shots at Fairfield, allowing only six goals in a 13-6 win against the Stags. The two victories helped the Griffs extend their winning streak to a school-record nine games, while the team clinched at least a share of the program’s first MAAC regular-season championship.

Scully has anchored a strong Canisius defense throughout the 2013 campaign. The sophomore ranks first in the NCAA with a .546 save percentage, while placing second nationally with a 6.69 goals against average.

The weekly accolade is the first for Scully during her career.

Scully and the Griffs look to continue their winning ways this weekend with a game against nationally-ranked Boston College. Canisius plays the No. 19 Eagles in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Saturday at 1 p.m.
