Golf Team Sits in Fourth at MAAC Championship

The Canisius College golf team posted a combined score of 309 on Saturday, led by senior Michael Carrig and his round of 74, to keep the Golden Griffins in fourth-place after two rounds of the 2013 MAAC Golf Championships at Disney’s Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Canisius senior Joe Vogl will enter the third and final round on Sunday morning in eighth place after he fired a three-over par score of 75 on Saturday. Carrig’s 74 in round two moves his tournament total score to 149, which ties him for ninth in the field with two other golfers. Senior Mike Spiotta shot a 79 in round two to move into a tie for 27th and freshman Hunter Sagar carded an 81 on Saturday, highlighted by his eagle-three on the par-5 11th hole.

Fairfield posted a team score of 295 on Saturday to pull into a first-place tie with first-round leader Iona. Both the Stags and the Gaels have a two-round team score of 588. Loyola (Md.) sits in third with Canisius Saint Peter’s and Manhattan rounding out the top-five. The Peacocks and the Jaspers are tied at 620, putting both teams five strokes behind the Griffs after 36 holes.

Iona’s Dylan Newman, who lead after his first round 68, is tied atop the leaderboard with Fairfield’s Steve Burak. Burak birdied the last two holes to post a 71 on Saturday.

The final round of the MAAC Golf Championship will be held Sunday. Canisius golfers will start to go off the first tee at 8:20 a.m.
