Pitcher Alex Godzak has been named to the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team by Collegiate Baseball. Godzak is the fourth Canisius player to be named a Freshman All-American in the past seven seasons.

The 2013 MAAC Rookie of the Year, Godzak went 8-3 with a 3.36 earned run average in 16 appearances, including 12 starts. The Syracuse, N.Y. native pitched 83 innings, struck out 66 batters and held the opposition to a .234 batting average. A three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, Godzak was a part of the first nine-inning no-hitter in program history on March 29. The 5-foot-9 lefty threw seven no-hit innings and combined with two relievers to complete the no-hitter. He ranked fifth in the MAAC in earned run average, tied for fourth in strikeouts and was third in victories.

Godzak joins Ian Choy (2007), Shane Davis (2008) and teammate Devon Stewart (2012) as previous Golden Griffins who have been selected as Freshman All-Americans.

Canisius won a program and conference-record 42 games during the 2013 season, making the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Griffins have won 217 games during the past six seasons, the second-most wins by a school in the Northeast since 2008. Canisius ranks 30th in the country in winning percentage (.622) during that timeframe and is the only school in the Northeast with 33 or more wins in five of the last six seasons.
