Here is this week’s installment of the “Canisius Men’s Basketball Summer Series”, a weekly feature that is taking look back at various aspects from the 2012-13 season before eventually a look forward to the 2013-14 campaign. These features will be posted every Monday throughout the summer until Monday, Aug. 26, the first official day of school for the 2013-14 academic year.

To take a look back at the first three weekly recaps, click Week 1, Week 2 or Week 3. This week, we scrap the top-five list and take a closer look inside the numbers.

The 2012-13 season saw a true offensive explosion by the Golden Griffins, just as head coach Jim Baron had promised when he was named the 23rd head coach in school history in April 2012. Baron often talks about his desire to play up-tempo and he has made no secret that he really likes his teams to be active from behind the 3-point line. Last season, Canisius scored 70 or more points 22 times and ended the year averaging 73.5 points per game, which ranked third in the MAAC and 45th in the nation.

2,499 - In 34 games (the most for the program since the 1994-95 season), Canisius tallied a total of 2,499 points, the most in school history. That number was the second-most in the MAAC and also ranked 45th nationally. The program’s previous record for total points in a season came during the 1994-95 year when the Blue and Gold scored 2,441 points in 35 contests. The 2012-13 team is only the second squad in school history to score more than 2,400 points in a year, and it marks just the fourth time in school history where the Blue and Gold tallied more than 2,300 points in a single season.

313 – The Griffs knocked down a school-record 313 3-point field goals in 2012-13, which also set a new MAAC record for 3-pointers made in a single season (the previous mark of 312 treys in a year was held by the 2006-07 Marist team). Canisius set a school record with 17 makes from long range in the team’s win at Marist Dec. 9, and the Griffs ended the year as the MAAC’s leader in 3-point field goals made per game at 9.2 per contest, which ranked third in the nation behind Iowa State and Charleston Southern.

38.6 percent – Canisius led the MAAC and ranked 16th in the country with its 38.6 percent effort from 3-point land, which ranks in the top-20 all-time in MAAC history. On the season, Canisius took a school-record 818 3-pointers, the first time in school history where the Blue and Gold took more than 800 shots from 3-point land. The Griffs had four players on the 2012-13 roster take more than 120 3-point shots, led by guard Isaac Sosa who took 232 shots from deep.

1,172 – Canisius’ 1,172 total rebounds in 2012-13 ranks fifth in school history. Four players had 120 or more rebounds, led by forward Chris Manhertz, who pulled down a team-high 297 rebounds in 34 games. Manhertz ended the season ranked second in the league and 55th in the nation with his 8.7 rebounds and he will enter his senior season with 574 career boards, which ranks 18th in the school’s history.

584 – Billy Baron wasted little time showing Canisius fans and MAAC observers that he is an offensive threat. After scoring a total of 311 points in his previous 37 career college games, Baron scored 584 points in 2012-13, the most points for a Canisius player in 28 seasons. He scored 30 or more points in three different games during the 2012-13 campaign, highlighted by his career-high 33-point effort in a win at Niagara. Baron ended the season averaging 17.2 points per game, which ranked third in the league and 78th in the nation.

95 – Before transferring to Canisius for his senior year, Isaac Sosa ranked fourth all-time in career 3-pointers made during his time at Central Florida. He carried that long-range accuracy north with him to Buffalo, and he ended his only year in a Griff uniform with 95 3-pointers – the most in school history. His 2.8 3-pointers per game ranked second in the MAAC and 28th in the country.

12 – Canisius set a new school record with 12 wins in the Koessler Athletic Center, highlighted by back-to-back victories over St. Bonaventure and Buffalo in the first consecutive on-campus sellouts in school history. In 16 home dates, the Blue and Gold averaged 1,579 fans with three sellouts, four crowds better than 2,000 and 13 home dates with more than 1,300 fans in the building.

20 – For the sixth time in school history and the first since 2000-01, the Griffs won 20 games. The 20th win of the year came in a memorable fashion, as the team overcame a 22-point second-half deficit to defeat Youngstown State on the road in the second round of the CIT.

Next Monday will have a report on what the Griffs are doing to prepare for the 2013-14 season.
