The Canisius College women’s soccer team used three consecutive goals to erase an early two-goal deficit, but couldn’t hold onto the lead as Charleston Southern (2-1-0) scored the game’s final two goals to win 5-3. The loss drops the Griffs record to 1-3-0 on the year.
After the Buccaneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute, freshman midfielder Sabrina Fitzgerald scored her first career goal three minutes later to pull the Griffs within one. The goal came off a corner kick, when Fitzgerald headed the pass from junior forward Mallory Illsley into the back of the net.
Just 10 minutes later, senior forward Brianna Smith netted her first of two goals in the contest to tie the game at two. Smith took the ball from 20 yards out and curled it past the keeper into the upper left corner.
The goal vaulted Smith into sole-possession of fourth on the all-time goal scoring list at Canisius.
Smith then added to her total scoring her 32nd career goal which gave the Griffs their only lead on the afternoon in the 46th minute. It came by heading a cross from senior midfielder Katie Griffin from 12 yards out.
Canisius held the lead for just 36 seconds, when Chelsea Phillips scored the first of her two goals. Phillips scored again in the 51st minute by sliding the ball past junior goalkeeper Brigid St. Leger to give Charleston Southern the lead for good.
The Griffs will remain in Charleston, S.C. for another game when they take on The Citadel Sunday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Game Notes: In addition to moving into fourth on the goal scoring list, Smith now holds fifth place on the all-time points list with 70... This was the third matchup between the Griffs and Charleston Southern, with the Buccaneers owning the all-time series 3-0-0.
