Women's Lacrosse Announces Team Award Winners

The Canisius College women’s lacrosse team announced its team award recipients last week. The 2013 team earned its third consecutive MAAC title last season.

Morgan Leonard was named Offensive Player of the Year. In her senior campaign, Leonard earned MAAC Midfielder of the Year Honors, and was a unanimous selection to the All-MAAC First Team. She was also selected to participate in the IWLCA/Under Armour North-South Senior All-Star game.

The Sykesville, Md. Native recorded 71 points in 2013, netting a school-record 59 goals to go along with 12 assists. She finished the season ranked first in the nation with 3.37 ground balls per game, and second nationally with 2.68 caused turnovers per game.

After just two seasons at Canisius, Leonard finished her career 10th in program-history with 110 points, eighth with 88 goals and third with 91 caused turnovers. Leonard also earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2012.

Earning Defensive Player of the Year honors was goalkeeper Kayla Scully. Her 7.81 goals against average in 2013 was good for a program-record and earned her MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Scully was the first underclassman since 2006 to earn the honors.

The Rodman, N.Y. native finished the season ranked second in the nation in save percentage with .515, she also ranked ninth in the nation in save percentage.

Rookie of the Year honors went to Ashley Bull, who helped anchor the top scoring defense in program history last season. The Griffs allowed just 8.47 goals per game in 2013, which ranked 13th in the nation.

Bull earned All-MAAC First Team honors for her play last season. She started 18 games in 2013 and finished the year with 37 ground balls, seven caused turnovers, eight draw controls, one goal and one assist.

Midfielder Maria Kotas is the 2013 recipient of the Kathy Fiore Memorial Award. Kotas, who earned First Team All-MAAC honors last season, finished the year with 42 goals and 25 assists. Kotas was also named to the All-MAAC First Team.

Midfielder Lindsey Morgan was won the Iron Griff Award. It was the second year in a row that the Lancaster, N.Y. native earned the honor. An all-conference selection in each of the last three seasons, including first-team honors in 2012 and 2013, Morgan recorded 50 points, 38 goals, 12 assists, 49 ground balls, 36 caused turnovers and 15 draw controls in 2013. The senior finished the season ranked 12th nationally with 1.89 caused turnovers per game.

Morgan Leonard's outstanding season also earned her the Golden Griffin award, the program’s legacy award. Leonard finished her standout career ranked among the best in the school’s record book in a number of categories. She is tied for seventh in the program’s history with 130 career points, while ranking sixth with 104 career goals and third with 91 career caused turnovers.
