Canisius College senior forward Chris Manhertz has been named Preseason All-MAAC Third Team, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced today. This marks the first career preseason award for Manhertz, who has served as a team captain for the Golden Griffins since his sophomore campaign.
Manhertz averaged 7.6 points and a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game in 2012-13 as the Griffs posted a 20-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in MAAC play. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound forward enters his senior season as the MAAC’s top returning rebounder, and his 7.8 boards per game last season ranked 50th in the nation. He ended his junior campaign with 297 total boards in 34 contests, which ranks seventh on the school’s single-season rebounding list. He was credited with 10 or more rebounds in 13 games last year, highlighted by his career-high 18 rebound-effort in the Blue and Gold’s road win at Marist Dec. 9. The Bronx, N.Y., native scored a career-high 17 points against Niagara at home Jan. 27, and he ended the 2012-13 season by shooting 54.9 percent from the field and 70.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Manhertz is joined on the Preseason All-MAAC Third-Team by Michael Alvarado and Emmy Andujar from Manhattan, Ike Azotam of Quinnipiac, Rob Poole from Siena and Maurice Barrow from Fairfield.
The MAAC office will announced the Preseason All-MAAC Second Team on Thursday, Oct. 10 and then plans to release the Preseason All-MAAC First-Team on Friday, Oct. 11.Canisius will officially open the 110th season in program history Monday, Nov. 11, when the Blue and Gold plays host to South Dakota in the Koessler Athletic Center.
