Over 250,000 people will flock to the shores of the Charles River in Boston, Mass. this weekend and for the Head of the Charles Regatta. For the first time in program history, those fans will get a chance to see the Canisius College rowing team participating in the event.

The Griffs’ Varsity Eight will compete in the 49th annual regatta that sees some of the nation’s fastest crews.

“This marks by far the biggest regatta and most speed we’ve ever faced,” said head coach Joel Furtek. “We’ll be rowing in a fish bowl environment, so everything we do will be watched, and I think it’s a great opportunity for us to who we are and what we can do.”

The Griffs’ Varsity Eight will include junior Liz Reinwald, freshman Liz DelBarba, sophomore Corrine Kickel, sophomore Nora Kennon, senior Liz McKinney, Senior Amanda Kielich, senior Allison Braun, and senior Bridget Laszewski. Sophomore Hannah Blum will be the coxswain.

Canisius will be one of 29 teams competing in the women’s collegiate race. The Griffs will be in the 27th starting position between Penn State and Boston College. Fellow MAAC schools Iona and Fairfield will also be in the race field.

“Here we get to race against a broad range of programs that we wouldn’t get to at a normal regatta,” Furtek said. “It’s also a great opportunity to get our name out there and extend the Canisius name outside of the Western New York community where everyone knows us.”

The event will be the fourth and final event of the Griffs’ fall season.
