Former Canisius pitcher John Axford and the St. Louis Cardinals have advanced to the World Series after defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games in the National League Championship Series. The Cardinals will face the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, which starts at Fenway Park on Wednesday.

In his fourth full year in the majors, Axford was traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 30. Axford appeared in two games for the Cardinals in the NLCS, allowing one run and striking out four in two innings. He also made two appearances in the National League Division Series, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings. In 2013, Axford made 75 appearances and posted 65 strikeouts with a 7-7 record and 4.02 earned run average.

Axford becomes the first Golden Griffin to ever play in the World Series. He is attempting to become the first former Canisius athlete to win a world championship in one of the four major sports leagues since Mike Smrek won titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1987 and 1988.

Axford spent the 2006 season with the Golden Griffins after starting his baseball career at the University of Notre Dame. With Canisius, Axford was 3-8 with a 5.08 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched.
