Canisius College rowing coach Joel Furtek announced today that Mackenzie App (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) has signed a National Letter of Intent to become the Griffs’ first signee of their 2014 recruiting class.
"Kenzie was our first verbal commitment for the Class of 2018 and was the first to return her National Letter of Intent -- she's motivated to be a Griff,” Furtek said. “Her speed and determination will provide an immediate boost to the team, and she was an instant fit with the women already at Canisius. We know she'll have the same rapport with the rest of her Class. I can't wait to watch her develop her own speed and that of our entire program!"
In addition to competing at the high school level for Charles W. Baker, she also rowed for the Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club. The 5-foot-8 App rows both sides and sculls.
She won a New York State Championship in the Junior Four 2013 with Baldwinsville. That same crew was awarded the 2013 Barbara Henderson Female Sports Team of the Year award for Central New York.
App has previously competed at the national level as well, finishing ninth at the 2013 Scholastic National Championships in Camden, N.J. She also competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta in 2012.
App joins the Canisius rowing program that finished third at the 2013 MAAC Championship, with a Varsity Eight that was named MAAC Crew of the Year.
