Canisius College rowing team has added three to its 2014 recruiting class, head coach Joel Furtek announced on Thursday.

Grace Horner (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne), Patti Beaulieu (Lockport, N.Y./Sacred Heart) and Josie Sheftic (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Pittsford Crew) have all signed National Letters of Intent to become Golden Griffins.

Horner joins the Griffs as a coxswain. At Chaminade Julienne high school, she led the Eagles 4+ to a top-10 finish at the US Rowing Youth National Championships in 2013.

"Grace's quiet leadership and competitive success make her a natural fit for our coxswain corps here at Canisius,” Furtek said. “She had a lot of options to continue her education and her quest for speed, and I'm thrilled that she has chosen to be a Griff. We can't wait to get her piloting a boat down the Black Rock Channel.”

The 5-foot-9 Beaulieu comes to Canisius out of West Side Rowing Club, which also rows on the Black Rock Channel.

"Patti brings athleticism and demonstrated speed to the Class of '18,” Furtek said. “She also brings a poise and balance in her efforts that will fit in well with our young team. We expect her to lead on and off the water very quickly. I'm so excited to keep her speed at West Side; she'll change uniform and blade colors but continue on her path to rowing and academic success."

Sheftic joins the Griffs from Pittsford Crew. The Honeoye Falls, N.Y. native joins Canisius fresh off a 25th place finish at the Head of the Charles Regatta in the women’s junior 8+. Sheftic also raced to a 16th place finish at the Junior Nationals and second at the New York State Championships in the women’s lightweight 8+.

“Josie's enthusiasm is infectious, and she connected quickly with our staff and team,” Furtek said. “She is well-prepared to thrive in our training environment and develop her true speed; she's also a terrific fit for the academic opportunities at Canisius. We're all anxious to lead her to her best.”

The three join Mackenzie App, who signed her National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, as members of Canisius rowing’s 2014 additions.
