Indoor Track Returns at the Southern Tier Open

For the first time in more than a decade, the Canisius College indoor track team suited up for an official meet.

The Griffs traveled to Cornell to compete in the Southern Tier Collegiate Open on Friday night, with several Griffs having strong performances in the program’s return.

“To be starting a full season was energizing for both the athletes and the coaches,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “There was a sense of purpose, and of anticipation for what is possible in future competitions. It was a very positive experience.”

Freshman Haley Keene tied her personal best in the 800-meter run (2:24.63), missing out on the school record by just six-tenths of a second. Keene would finish sixth in the event.

The Griffs highest place finish came from sophomore Cooper Roach, who finished third in the mile with a time of 4:23.92. Roach came out of the gates hard and battled near the top for the entire race, but ultimately fell behind a pair of Binghamton runners (Eathan Hausmann and Chris Fernandez).

Senior Catherine Phillips ran to a sixth place finish in the 3000-meter run (10:32.58).

Canisius also saw a pair of runners place in the top-10 in the 1,000-meter run. Freshmen Xavier Sauvageau placed sixth (2:39.22), and Jeff Antolos (2:43.98) finished 10th.

The Griffs’ next meet will come Jan. 18, when they travel to R.I.T.
