HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Canisius College women’s lacrosse team notched its first win of the season on Tuesday in a 12-11 win over Colgate.
Senior midfielder Maria Kotas and junior attacker Tori Quinn led the way for the Griffs offensively, tallying four goals each.
“Today was a great character win for us, all in all we made enough plays to win the game,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “Even though it’s early, we still made a lot of systematic mistakes and didn’t put the game out of reach in the first half. We have more areas that we can build off and have things to concentrate on moving forward in order to be successful this season.”
Canisius got off to a fast start, behind a pair Quinn goal and freshman midfielder Ashley Heisler’s first collegiate goal, which gave Canisius a 3-1 advantage. However, the lead didn’t last long as the Raiders used a 5-1 run later in the half to open a 6-4 lead.
The Griffs would battle back with goals by sophomore midfielder Ashley Bull on back-to-back Canisius possessions, and another tally by Quinn to close out the half, leaving the game knotted at seven.
The Griffs managed to get its two-goal lead back twice in the second half with Kotas scoring three of her four goals in the second frame.
The Raiders attempted to rally late, cutting the Canisius lead to back to one with under two minutes to play, but junior goalkeeper Kayla Scully the biggest of her eight saves with 14 seconds left to preserve the Canisius win.
Next, the Griffs will host Ohio State in the team’s home opener on Saturday, March 1. Frist draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
